NAB approves enquiry against Balochistan Public Service Commission chief

In a major development on Tuesday, the executive board meeting of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) authorised an enquiry into the Balochistan Public Service Commission (BPSC) scam.

The BPSC chairman and other members were accused of misusing authority, exercising favouritism, nepotism, and corrupt practices while appointing officials against 800 vacancies of grade 16 to18.

NAB Chairman Fasih Bokhari chaired the meeting, in which, it was alleged that the posts of head mistresses (BS-17) were sold for Rs 1.7 million each and assistant commissioners for Rs 4 million each without observing merit.

The board decided to refer a case to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) against four former directors of the Bank of Punjab (BoP) so that a reference could be filed with NAB through the SBP governor under Section 31-D of the NAO 1999. The accused have been accused of obtaining bank loans in violation of rules and regulations.

The board also decided to close four enquiries for want of incrementing evidence against the accused, the first among whom was GEPCO CEO Rana Zahid Ashraf and others. They were accused of corruption in procurement of steel cross arms, capacitors, corruption in acquisition of land for grid station at Khiali Aroop and illegal appointments in GEPCO. The second case was against Nawaz Ali Samejo, former chief engineer of WAPDA. In this case, Samejo was accused of embezzling Rs 13.86 million in the purchase of one shaft circulating pump and one Thrust Roller Bearing. The third case was against former Peshawar Farm Water Management Agriculture Department director general Yousaf Khattak who was accused of accumulating assets beyond known sources of income.

The fourth case was against National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) President Qamar Hussain who was accused of submitting fake educational degrees for appointment by changing his father name.

  2. It is the right step by the NAB to question the Balochistan Public Service Commission chief and do proper justice to the hundreds of meritorious candidates who want to serve their nation in the most respectful way possible. The corrupt officials should be removed from service too.
