Supreme Court Justice Nasirul Mulk on Monday said that in this age of globalisation judges are expected to have a well-rounded education and an understanding between the Federal Judicial Academy (FJA) and the UNDP/UNOPs would be helpful for improving the quality of judicial education.
He expressed these views on the occasion of the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Federal Judicial Academy and the UNDP/UNOPS.
Mulk said, “This memorandum of understanding provides a broad framework for ongoing interaction on issues such as infrastructural, professional growth and development and research excellence for the legal empowerment of the poor in Pakistan. This initiative is a historic development and we foresee an exchange of information and mutual support in a number of areas such as the proposal to hold joint seminars, workshops, orientations on new subjects of common interest, which will add to our portfolio of cooperation in the future.”
The judge spoke about the role of the Supreme Court’s Human Rights Cell and its modus operandi for an easy and speedy dispensation of justice to complainants.
He expressed sincere gratitude to everyone, including UNOPS Country Director Mikko Lainejoki, UNDP Country Director Jean Luc Stalon, their colleagues and district judiciary judges from Rawalpindi and Islamabad who attended the ceremony.
Academy DG Parvaiz Ali Chawla said, “This MoU will help us improve judicial education and research for quality coverage of the judicial system. On behalf of the FJA, I would like to reaffirm our commitment to this agreement.”
Stalon said, “Legal empowerment lies at the nexus of law and development and is an essential process for attaining key outcomes of strengthening rule of law and improving access to justice.”
