After months of uncertainty, the fate of Deepa Mehta’s Midnight’s Children is finally sealed. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) cleared the movie, based on Salman Rushdie’s 1980 novel Midnight’s Children, on Wednesday. “We are relieved and excited at the thought of the film reaching the country’s audience intact,” said Deepa. The film, based on the controversial novel has been issued an ‘A’ certificate with minor cuts. Writer and spokesperson for CBFC, Anjum Rajabali, said, “The cuts were more on technical grounds, like the depiction of the map of India. The national emblem was also partially cut.” Rajabali added, “The film is based on Rushdie’s book, which was quite critical of the Emergency (declared in 1975). However, the adult audience is discerning enough to view it in its historical context. Moreover, the story evolves through the viewpoint of the protagonist, so it is subjective. It was important to respect the narrative integrity of the film.”
