The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has prepared a plan to vacate Afghan refugees from Sector I-11 and specified Dec 20 as the deadline for residents to evacuate the area, after which an operation would be launched.
According to details, the CDA has finalised arrangements to evacuate slum areas of Sector I-11. In the initial phase, illegal residents have been given time till Dec 20 to voluntarily leave the area after which the civic body, in collaboration with the Capital Territory Police, would launch an operation for the complete repatriation of Afghan nationals.
This was stated by CDA Estate Management Member Shaista Sohail during a meeting of the National Assembly executive committee chaired by Hameedullah Jan Afridi.
Shaista said around 7,995 illegal Afghan immigrants had been residing in the slums and they were given the options of an alternate location or facilities for repatriation. She added that dialogues would be held with illegal Afghan nationals for volunteer repatriation till Dec 20, after which an operation would be conducted for forceful evacuation of the area.
The Ministry of States and Frontier Regions (Safron) secretary said that registered Afghan nationals would be shifted to refugee camps, while transport facilities would be provided to the rest to leave for their native areas.
Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said that criminal elements had taken shelter in slum areas and become a security threat to the city.
