Bus stands wither away as govt funds other projects

Passengers on Friday continued to suffer as it was found that the General Bus Stand (Lorry Adda) lacks basic facilities like drinking water, toilets, seating arrangements and sheds. General Bus Stand is in a dilapidated condition and warrants immediate attention of the authority concerned, several passengers said. Narrowal, Narang, Shakargarh, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Shahkot, Faisalabd, Sahiwal, Sadiqabad and other terminals need more consideration of the authorities due to poor arrangements for drainage of rainwater.
Thousands of passengers reach the stand every day. However, there are no waiting rooms or any other facility for them. The Lahore General Bus Stand at Badami Bagh has no water cooler, public toilets, shelters or seating arrangements while garbage heaps are all around the area. All bus lanes are broken and hotels serve substandard food.
During rains, these stands are flooded with filthy water as there is no proper drainage system and commuters have no option but to take shelter at shops along the roads.
“We have to wait for long to park buses. There is very little space compared to the number of vehicles. It causes fights among drivers,” said Shahzad, a bus conductor.
Admitting to the problems faced at General Bus Stand, a spokesman for the Transport Department said that an emergency meeting with all bus stand owners would soon be called. He asked citizens to be patient while the government takes action to address their problems.
