ECP to verify voters lists with Army help

Secretary of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Ishtiaque Ahmed said Thursday that the verification of voter lists will be done with the aid of the army and will require 65 days.
Briefing media here, the Secretary said the new delimitation of constituencies in Karachi will be done according to the orders of the Supreme Court.
The ECP Secretary added that the army would be deployed inside and outside of polling stations during the next general election.
According to Ahmed, the ECP had made a decision to deploy the army at all polling stations of Karachi and FATA, while it would also be deployed at polling stations in sensitive areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
He said that there were 8.6 million voters and verification letters would soon be sent to concerned departments. He said services of 13622 provincial government employees would be hired for door to door verification of voters lists.
Giving further details, he said that door-to-door verification would take a month while similar time would be required by National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) for uploading the details of forms.
About complaints of rigging during by-elections in Punjab and Sindh provinces, he said the commission received general complaints but no concrete evidence was submitted in this regard.
However, he said that there was a need to learn lessons from the recent by-polls and in upcoming elections, flaws noticed in the recent by-elections will be removed.
