10 killed in assault on Bannu police

In a wave of terror incidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Monday, at least 10 people, including three policemen, were killed and several others injured in a militant ambush on Kakki Police Station in Bannu district while seven people sustained injuries when a low-intensity bomb went off close to the venue of an Awami National Party public meeting in Charsadda where party chief Asfandyar Wali was due to address supporters. In the first incident, four militants launched an attack on the police station in the wee hours of Monday. The dead included four civilians who were returning from a nearby mosque after offering morning prayers, while the station house officer of Kakki Police Station was also injured in the assault. District Police Officer Waqar Ahmad said security guards opened fire on two persons moving towards the police station when they ignored a warning to stop. The two then retaliated with indiscriminate fire and hurling hand grenades at the station. The DPO said a third assailant was apparently hiding inside a nearby mosque and made an attempt to rescue his accomplices by opening fire on the policemen. However, all three were killed by security officials before any further damage. Locals said another assailant, however, fled the clash and police were making efforts to arrest him. The police recovered a rifle, 608 cartridges and a hand grenade from the scene. The army was also called in to aid the civil administration. Meanwhile in Charssada, police said unidentified men planted a low-intensity bomb in the car parking set up in connection with the ANP meeting. The explosives went off when people started arriving for the meeting. As a result, several people sustained minor injuries. However, the ANP leadership continued the public meeting despite the explosion after the police tightened security measures around the area. Security sources said 500 grams of explosives were used to make the remote-controlled bomb.
