Punjab Inspector General of Prisons Mian Farooq Nazeer has awarded special education remission to 1,107 entitled convicts for qualifying in middle to master level examinations, including religious courses.
Central Jail Sahiwal Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gulzar Ahmad Butt told APP on Sunday that a total of 5,362 convicts undergoing different terms of sentences in the 32 jails across the province appeared in primary to masters level exams including short duration religious courses. 3,353 were declared successful by the respective universities and boards of intermediate and secondary education, he added. He further said that a total of 1,107 convicts had so far been awarded special education remission strictly in accordance with the revised rule 215 notified by the Punjab Home Department dated 05.03.1990. He also said that a total of 13 convicts who memorised the Holy Quran by heart were also awarded up to two years special remission.
Moreover, he said that on the special directive of Punjab IG Prisons, major emphasis had been laid on imparting quality education to all eligible convicts and exams were conducted by the universities and boards concerned.
