National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Admiral (R) Fasih Bukhari is making efforts in cooperation with stakeholders like media, civil society, public and private sector entities and the youth to eradicate corruption from Pakistani society.
He stated this in a statement issued by National Accountability Bureau to mark the day when United Nations convention against Corruption (UNCAC) was placed before the member states for signing at Mexico back in 2003.
Pakistan was amongst those nations at the Charter of UN who signed the Convention at initial stages and remained an active member in its deliberations for combating corruption, ratifying the Convention in August 2007.
The NAB also participated in its pilot programme on review implementation of UNCAC, where Pakistan was review by Croatia and UK for 8 articles of the convention under its peer review exercise. The report generated through this exercise can be seen at the website of United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime being the designated Secretariat for this programme.
It would not be out of place to mention here that NAB has so for recovered Rs 250 billion corruption money siphoned off by the corrupt. The Bureau filed around 711 references against corrupt persons in the Accountability Courts. The conviction rate in these references remained 68 percent. NAB’s expenditures remained at 1:48, meaning thereby that NAB spent 1 rupee to recover 48 rupees to the government exchequer.
Under its prevention of corruption regime as envisaged in the provisions of UNCAC under its second chapter, NAB is striving at a faster pace under able leadership of new Chairman Admiral (R) Fasih Bukhari. During last 6 months NAB under its prevention regime saved Rs 1.5 trillion from being embezzled through its early interventions in more than a thousand projects.
