Water storage capacity of Tarbela, Mangla widens

Country’s water storage has been decreased significantly in Tarbela, Mangla dams where live water storage has been recorded at 4.413 million acre feet (MAF).
According to statistical data of Federal Flood Commission during last couple of days provinces are given due share of water from these reserves for irrigation and power production but due to less rains live water storage in the dams have been decreasing.
Statistical data further revealed that Since Nov 01, live water level in the Tarbela dam has been decreased by 54 feet and water level reduced to 1461 feet. During the same time, water level reduced by 32 feet in Mangla dam and live storage level is 1156 feet.
Officials of Meteorological department told Online that due to climate change, seasonal rains have been delayed to from Dec to Jan and snow is also expected in the same period.
Officials said that due to delay in the rains water is utilized for irrigation and power production therefore major volume of dams is being provided for agricultural purposes.
According to statistical data water level in the Tarbela dam elevation is 1462.85 cusec and live storage 2.210MAF and 20400 Cs mean inflow and 55000Cs outflow. Live water storage in Mangla dam is 1157.90 cusec with 2.292 MAF live storage with 9040 mean inflow and 30000 cusec outflow.
Tarbela and Mangla dams are 4.78 feet and 36.95 feet below their respective Maximum Conservation Levels of 1550.00 feet and 1242.00 feet.
According to the data water level in Chashma is at 1645.30 ft with live storage 0.136 MAF.
Data further stated that water share from these reserves to the provinces is Punjab 52,300Cs, Sindh 35.000 Cs, Balochistan 4,000 and KPK 2,600Cs.

  1. Pakistan is a beautiful country and the vast majority of its people very self -respecting individuals.

    Pakistan needs to conserve its water and use this resource to generate power and irrigate its lands. Pakistan must make more dams.
