Scarcity of essential goods has manifested itself across the country due to a strike by Goods Transport Associations.
The strike by the association bringing to halt transportation of goods inland from Port Qasim and Karachi Port entered its seventh day on Saturday. The shortage manifested itself on Thursday and the association warned to not call off the strike until their complaints regarding increasing incidents of robbery on highways and harassing of truck drivers by highway and motorway police was not addressed. The shortage of necessary commodities including medicines and edible items may result in a public backlash against authorities. The strike has clogged the trade cycle especially of the Karachi: the economic hub of the country.
The transporters staged a protest demonstration at the Hawks Bay and blocked all traffic for more than six hours on Saturday.
