Assistant Secretary for International Security and Nonproliferation Thomas Countryman will travel to Pakistan, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Belgium from today (December 9-17).
In Islamabad, Assistant Secretary Countryman will participate in the United States-Pakistan Security, Strategic Stability, and Nonproliferation Working Group, led on the US side by Rose Gottemoeller, Acting Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security. These regular talks between the United States and Pakistan cover a range of bilateral and multilateral nonproliferation issues and follow other recent working groups on economics and finance, energy, and defense.
Assistant Secretary Countryman will then travel to the United Kingdom on December 10 to participate in a conference on the nuclear nonproliferation regime at Wilton Park. Discussions like these help provide much needed informal interaction between representatives from government, nongovernmental organizations, and International Organizations.
In Geneva December 13-14, he will participate in the Annual Meeting of the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention.
On his final stop, in Brussels, Countryman will attend the US-EU Verification and Compliance Dialogue on non-proliferation and disarmament.
