Judges appointments: Reference filed in Supreme Court

The federal government filed Friday in the Supreme Court (SC) a presidential reference over the appointment of Islamabad High Court (IHC) judges’ appointment.
At least 13 questions have been raised in the 12-page reference. At least 19-page documents have also been submitted along with the reference filed by the Law Secretary.
According to the sources, the reference has been prepared by Wasim Sajjad and signed by President Asif Ali Zardari.
The President, in the reference, requested the apex court to render advice under Article-186 of the Constitution over 13 issues including judges’ appointment, role of judicial commission and parliamentary committee.
It should be mentioned here that this presidential reference has been prepared about a conflict over appointment of judges in Islamabad High Court, added the sources.

  1. Hiring & firing of judges should be the sole prerogative of Executive & Parliament. The concept that judges be hired & fired by judiciary is a joke.
