The Senate Standing Committee on Housing and Works, while expressing serious reservations over the illegal occupation of government owned houses, formed a sub-committee to review the matter and submit a report within two months.
The committee also sought details of government employees who had received three plots from the Ministry of Housing and Works.
The committee met under the chairmanship of Shahi Syed. It was informed that 332 government flats had been illegally occupied by government employees and Islamabad Police officials, and there were 1,250 stay orders against the vacation of these flats. It was also informed that there were 8,000 government houses in the capital with 0.2 million allottees in the waiting list.
Housing Secretary Kamran Lashari informed the committee that plots in the Kurri Model Village had been allotted to officers in grades 20 and 21, while grade 22 officers received more than two plots under the Prime Minister’s Special Package.
Committee member Abdul Nabi Bangash said that civil servants should not be awarded more than one plot.
The committee formed a sub-committee under the chairmanship of Zafar Ali Shah to review the status of illegal occupants in government owned houses.
The committee directed the Housing Ministry to launch housing schemes for lower grade employees and the general public.
