Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf said that Pakistan and Iran enjoyed close and brotherly relations which were rooted in historical, cultural and religious commonalities.
He expressed these views in a meeting with the Iranian parliamentary delegation led by National Security and Foreign Policy Standing Committee Chairman Alaeddin Broujeri at the PM’s House on Tuesday.
The prime minister noted that cooperation between the two countries was on a positive trajectory. He underscored the importance of a constant and extended contact between parliamentarians and public representatives to further cement relations.
Ashraf said that close economic ties between the two countries were reflected in their cooperation on the gas pipeline, electricity and infrastructure projects.
The PM said that Iran and Pakistan had shared their objectives vis-à-vis Afghanistan, and pledged to work in tandem for peace and reconciliation. He said that a peaceful, prosperous and stable Afghanistan was in the entire region’s interest. He added that terrorism and extremism were common enemies and all countries must join hands to defeat them.
Mr Broujeri said that Iran was keen on expanding and strengthening its relations with Pakistan. In this connection, agriculture was an area where both countries could cooperate more intensely, he added.
He thanked Ashraf who asked him to convey his best wishes to the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khomeini. Other members of the delegation included Mohammad Esmaeili and Ali Reza Ayyari.
