Jamia Binoria Al Aalamia Karachi Mohtamim, Maulana Mufti Muhammad Naeem while expressing concern about the rising cases of domestic violence in society, called upon the people to recall that the Holy Quran enjoins good treatment of women, and Muslims who are abusive to women actually slander Islam.
According to a Human Rights Watch report, mistreatment of women and girls, including forced marriage, rape and domestic violence remains a major problem in Pakistan. Maulana Naeem said, “Allah has enjoined upon men to treat their wives fairly, to the extent that a man is allowed to leave his wife or divorce her gracefully if their relationship becomes strained.”
Maulana Naeem narrated the following event from the annals of Islamic history: “A man came to the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and asked him that who among the people was the best of men. The Prophet (PBUH) replied that the best among men is he who is the best mannered and he who is good towards his family and children.” Maulana Naeem went on to state that, “Allah, as well as the sayings of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) clearly forbid violence against women.”
Maulana Naeem clarified a widely held misperception prevalent in a section of society by firmly stating that Islam did not allow domestic violence and violence against women. “The Holy Prophet (PBUH) clearly forbids such acts,” he said. “He (PBUH) went to the extent of telling abusive men that they should be ashamed of establishing marital relations and committing violence against their women,” Maulana Mufti added.
It may be recalled that Pakistan had been counted among those countries that often made the headlines due to domestic and gender based violence and sexual harassment.
