Violence looms over Karachi, 10 more killed

A madrassa administrator was among 10 people killed in Karachi on Monday, as the country’s financial hub continues to be at the mercy of criminals.
Police said Maulana Mohammad Ismail was killed when unidentified attackers sprayed bullets on his car on Abul Hassan Isfahani Road. The administrator of Madarasa Ahsan-Ul-Uloom was killed on the spot. Following the killing, angry students from the seminary set several vehicles, including an ambulance, on fire at Gulshan Chowrangi. They also pelted stones at cars, disrupting traffic in adjoining areas. A cameraman of a private TV channel was also injured in the protests. Following the tension, shops and businesses in the area were closed down for the day and security forces arrived to take hold of the situation. Police also had to resort to shelling to disperse the crowd and arrested several protesters from the scene.
Separately in Bilal Colony area of Orangi, unidentified gunmen opened fire and killed Inspector Hidyatullah. Also, two unidentified bodies were recovered near the Sohrab Goth police checkpost, while two brothers who belonged to a political party were gunned down in a firing incident near Sabir Chowk in Orangi. Another man was killed in a firing incident at Al-Asif Square.
