Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Turkey on Monday amid tensions between Moscow and Ankara over the Syrian crisis. The two countries are expected to sign nine deals in trade and energy fields during Putin’s one-day visit.
The deals aimed at increasing the bilateral trade between the two countries 1,000 U.S. dollars in coming years.
On the eve of Putin’s visit, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said Russia is keen on engaging in building another nuclear plant in Turkey.
“Russia would like to be involved in the construction of other nuclear plants in Turkey,” said Novak.
Russia is building Turkey’s first nuclear plant in the southern province of Mersin.
Novak also said that Russia is willing to increase its gas supplies to Turkey this winter if an agreement is reached.
Putin is scheduled to meet with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan later on Monday. The two leaders are expected to exchange views on the Syrian crisis as well as the possible deployment of NATO’s Patriot missiles on Turkey’s border with Syria.
