Shakil Afridi calls off hunger strike

Dr Shakil Afridi on Saturday called off his hunger strike when some of his demands were accepted by the jail administration at Peshawar Central Jail. Reliable sources told Pakistan Today that the jail administration informed Dr Shakil Afridi about the restoration of certain facilities including the provision of blankets, warm clothes and some newspapers and magazines, after which Dr Afridi called off his hunger strike. However, the jail administration has not yet accepted the demand of Jamil Afridi, Dr Shakil Aridi’s brother, to provide medical care to the prisoner. Jamil Afridi had pleaded before Peshawar Commissioner to direct the jail administration to allow a medical check-up of Dr Afridi, as he seems to have developed a chest infection due to severe torture by the policemen. Since his telephone interview to a foreign TV channel from inside the prison, Dr Afridi had been kept in solitary confinement.
