A man who jumped from the burning 10th storey of State Life Insurance’s building located in Saddar area of the city, passed away at a hospital here on Wednesday.
According to sources, the blaze erupted owing to short circuiting of electricity wires in an office located at the 10th storey of the building located in front of Zainab Market, leaving several people trapped inside. The offices of the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) are also located in the same building.
The deceased Owais, who panicked and jumped from a 10th storey window to save his life, lost his grip and fell to the ground. He received critical wounds and was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Earlier, an official of the fire brigade said that on receiving the information, five fire engines and two snorkels were dispatched to the spot. He further stated that those inside the building evacuated themselves through the emergency exists.
Meanwhile, the Chief Fire Officer Ehtashamuddin, while talking to media persons, said several people were pulled out from the building and any major loss of life was prevented due to the timely coordination of different departments. However, the smoke had spread on to various floors of the building. It is important to mention here that the building had a fire fighting system that proved beneficial in taming the wild flames, he observed. Meanwhile, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) demanded the government to announce financial aid for the family of the victim. Speaking to media persons, MQM leader Raza Haroon expressed grief over the death of Owais who was a resident of Korangi.
Furthermore, the Sindh Information Technology Minister said that the MQM would soon announce financial aid for the family of the victim. “MQM condoles the death of an ordinary resident of Korangi and will take every measure to aid the victim’s family,” he added. In addition, the acting Sindh Governor Nisar Ahmed Khuhro had also taken notice of the fire incident in the State Life Building. According to details, the acting governor also sought an immediate report from the KESC Managing Director in this regard. He further directed the officials concerned that there should be a complete inquiry regarding the fire incident. The acting governor expressed grief on the demise of the young man who had come to the KESC office for an interview.
