Dr Saeed Ahmed Khan – the renowned eye specialist who was abducted a few weeks ago from Quetta leading to a strike by doctors across Balochistan – was recovered on Wednesday.
Dr Saeed was abducted on October 16 by unidentified armed men from Saryab Road.
Talking to reporters at his residence, Dr Saeed thanked all those who made efforts for his recovery.
He expressed concern over the targeted killings and kidnapping of doctors in Balochistan, saying the practice must end.
“I have no idea whether ransom money was paid or by whom.”
Meanwhile, Pakistan Medical Association’s (PMA) Balochistan President Dr Shehzad said there was no government role in the recovery of Dr Saeed Ahmed and he got released after paying ransom money.
The doctors who went on strike following Saeed’s abduction, however, did not call off the strike, saying protests would continue until police apologised for manhandling doctors.
Dr Shehzad demanded the government to provide security to doctors across the province, adding that a meeting had been summoned that would decide the future course of action. He lamented that doctors had only demanded security from the government. On the other hand, the provincial government continued with its actions against striking doctors, suspending them from service, holding back their salaries and expelling them from official residences.
The government has also published advertisements in newspapers for recruitment of fresh doctors.
The on-strike doctors demanded the government to apologise over its attitude and conduct judicial inquiry into the police manhandling during the doctors’ rally.
