Seven killed in van CNG cylinder blast

Seven people on Monday were burnt to death when a passenger van caught fire on Multan road near Manga Mandi.
Four of the deceased were members of the same family. Three other passengers also died during the blast.
The passenger vehicle was reportedly fitted with two CNG cylinders and one LPG cylinder.
The driver attempted to switch to the LPG cylinder when, a passenger lit a cigarette at the same time, setting off the blast. The vehicle subsequently caught fire.
At least nine people were reported to be injured and were shifted to Jinnah Hospital.
The van was coming from Sahiwal when the incident occurred. Two women and two children were also killed.
Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif formed a committee under Transport provincial secretary to investigate in the matter.
Despite a ban on the use of CNG in public buses, almost all transporters have converted their vehicles to run on the cheaper fuel option.
In 2011, more than 2,000 people died across the country in CNG cylinder explosions, according to a report released by a non-governmental organisation, Civil Society Front in April this year. In September, a boy was killed and several other passengers were injured in a similar blast in Karachi. As per ISO-9000 certified quality act, the annual or bi-annual inspection of CNG kits is compulsory.
