Chairman Agri Forum Ibrahim Mughal has said India was not serious in trade relations with Pakistan, which is evident from its move of imposing 100 percent raise on duty on import of sugar from Pakistan.
Talking to media persons, he said India will have to import 2.5 million tones sugar this year due to decline in its domestic production. He said India was supposed to import sugar from Pakistan, but it chose to increase the import duty by 100 percent, hereby showing that it was not serious in trade with Pakistan.
He said this move of India should serve an eye opener for Pakistani rulers, who were bent upon giving Most Favored Nation (MFN) status to India. He said Pakistan was in a position to export 700,000 tones sugar to India this year, but India imposed such a heavy duty to deprive Pakistan of this advantage.
Besides that, Ibrahim Mughal said, India has also put several artificial hurdles in export of cement from Pakistan, which has showed its real intentions.
He said it is time for the Pakistani rulers to open their eyes and realize the real intention of the so-called free trade with India.
