The death toll in the Rawalpindi Moharram procession blast climbed to 23, as three more injured people succumbed to wounds in the hospital on Thursday.
Around 20 people had been killed and 65 others were injured on Wednesday night in a suicide bombing incident in Dhok Syedaan that ripped through a Moharram mourning procession.
Law-enforcers and rescue teams arrived on the spot after receiving information about the blast and seized eight more hand grenades from the scene.
Regional Police Officer Captain Zubair said that the blast was suicidal in nature and the attacker, who was trying to enter the mourning procession, blew himself up causing massive destruction. The injured were rushed to different hospitals including District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital, Benazir Bhutto Hospital and Holy Family Hospital. According to sources, investigations at the blast site yielded clues including organs of the attacker’s body and finger prints. The investigation team would try to identify the bomber by putting together parts of his face, police investigators said.
