In order to express solidarity with Palestinian people against Israeli aggression at the Gaza Strip, Awami Workers Party (AWP) held a protest demonstration on Thursday at Aabpara Chowk.
Carrying banners and placards inscribed with slogans against Israel, over 50 activists from left wing parties assembled at the Chowk and demanded the government to raise its voice against Israeli aggression.
Protests were organised by AWP in different parts of the country following the recent mass killing at the Gaza strip. “We are here to express solidarity with the people of Palestine and condemn atrocities committed by Israel” said AWP Women’s Secretary Farzana Bari.
She said that the people of Pakistan condemned the brutal act and assured full support for Palestinians. Bari said that the Arab rulers’ and Pakistani military’s cordial relations with the US government was in stark contrast to their domestic image. She said that because of their economic dependence on the US and international financial institutions, Muslim countries could not be relied on to defend the rights of their people.
AWP Vice President Hassan Nisar said that the recent aggression by Israel was linked to the state’s imperialist designs under the patronage of United States. “The time has come for all workers of the country to unite against imperialism’’ he added.
Ali Hassan, a participant in the protest, said that it was unfortunate that Arab countries had remained silent spectators against the recent killings.
AWP Information Secretary Nisar Shah, while addressing participants, said that forces that claimed to be champions of human rights had been badly exposed in the recent killing. He said that protest would continue across the country if the killing of innocent Palestinians was not stopped.
