Rangers, soldiers to maintain peace during Muharram

Around 36 contingents of the Army and Rangers would be deployed to ensure foolproof security in the Rawalpindi division from 7th to 10th Muharram.
Rawalpindi Division Commissioner Imdad Ullah Bosal said on Monday that all arrangements for the security of mourners had been finalized by departments concerned before the start of Muharram. He said that elaborate security arrangements had been made for Muharram and the authorities concerned had also been requested for deployment of military troops and rangers for security. “We have asked for 36 contingents of the Army and Rangers, as we need them to maintain a peaceful atmosphere during Muharram”, he said.
Bosal said that around 10 contingents of the Army and four contingents of Rangers would be deployed in Rawalpindi district. Likewise, six Army contingents and four contingents of Rangers would be deployed in the Attock district, four contingents of the Army and two contingents of Rangers would be positioned in Chakwal and three contingents of the Army and three contingents of Rangers would also be deployed in Jhelum district.
He further said that coordinated efforts were being made with the help of all departments concerned. There would also be aerial surveillance for the security of processions on 9th and 10th Muharram to make the security arrangements foolproof.
According to details, out of the total majalis to be conducted in the division, in Rawalpindi district 208 majalis had been put in category A, 369 in category B and 1200 majalis had been placed in category C. In Chakwal district there would be one majalis in category A and 775 majalis in category C, in Attock district there would be 171 majalis in category A, 40 in category B and 543 in category C. In Jhelum district, six majalis would be placed in category B and 463 majalis in category C.
In Rawalpindi division a total of 171 licensed mourning processions and 836 traditional processions will be carried out from the 1st of Muharram to the 30th.
In Rawalpindi district there would be 64 licensed and 384 traditional mourning processions, in Attock district there would be 16 licensed and 137 traditional processions, in Chakwal district there would be 17 licensed and 225 traditional processions while in Jhelum district 30 licensed and 130 traditional processions would be carried out.

Muharram security: 28 Ulema barred from religious, social events

To ensure sectarian harmony and law and order in the garrison city, 28 Ulema from different schools of thought were barred from speaking at religious or social events.
According to sources, the entry of 28 other religious scholars into Rawalpindi had also been banned. These steps had been taken on intelligence reports that certain extremist organizations were planning to disturb peace in the country.
Rawalpindi DCO Saqib Zafar banned 28 religious scholars from delivering speeches in the city premises for 60 days and sent a list of these scholars to the police.
