The 13-bed labour room of the Jinnah Hospital, where around 50 deliveries are performed every day, lacks the required facilities and equipment to sustain the ever increasing number of patients.
According to details, there were only two operation theatres in the hospital while it needed four. Often two or three newborns had to share one bed in the labour room while the facility required at least 50 beds, said a doctor of the department on condition of anonymity. There was no ultrasound or cardiac topography equipment in the labour room, he added.
Similarly, the facility was often short of antibiotic medicines and people had to purchase it from the open market. When contacted, officials concerned said more funds were required to fix out-of-order equipment and to also increase the strength of other departments of the hospital.
