Gallantry award for cop who thwarted car theft

Minister for Interior Rehman Malik will confer `Sitara e Shujaat’ to a policeman who embraced martyrdom on Friday in a bid to foil a car theft attempt.
Malik announced a cash award of Rs 30,00,000 to his family under the Prime Minister Package for martyred personnel. Malik made this announcement after offering the funeral prayer of ASI Riaz, who was martyred after being fired on by car thieves, at the Police Line Headquarters in Sector G-9 on Friday.
Islamabad IGP Bani Amin Khan, DIG Headquarters Sultan Azam Temuri, DIG (Security) Ahmed Mukarram, AIG (Operations) Tahir Alam Khan, SSP (Operations) Yaseen Farooq, SSP (Headquarters) Muhammad Yousuf Malik, SSP (Traffic) Dr Moeen Masood, officials from district administration and a large number of policemen as well as officials were also present on the occasion.
The IGP stated in a press release that car lifters had gunned down Assistant Sub Inspector Riaz from Islamabad Police who, along with his colleague, had tried to overpower car lifters in sector G-9 on Friday. A spokesman said that a Margalla Police vehicle was on routine patrol in Sector G-9 when the police patrolling officers including ASI Raiz observed some persons fiddling suspiciously with a black coloured Corolla car (STN-21) outside a private hotel.
The ASI had rushed towards the vehicle when the suspects opened fire on him killing him on the spot from a bullet in his chest. Police Constable Rizwan Mustafa also received injuries as the car lifter fired at him. The ASI’s body and the injured cop were shifted to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS). After hearing the sound of the firing, local people gathered and tried to overpower the suspects.
Three citizens were injured during this attempt. One suspect identified as Iftikhar, who is a resident of Parachinar Kuram Agency, was overpowered by the people while his accomplices Abbass Raza, Muneer Khan and Zahir Ali managed to escape the scene. Police teams had been constituted to arrest the absconding criminals.
The IGP and SSP Yaseen reached the scene soon after the incident and collected evidence from the crime spot.
Rehman Malik attended the funeral prayer of the deceased ASI at Police Lines Headquarters and recognized his sacrifice in line of duty.
The minister announced to compensate his family.
He decided to confer a `Sitara e Shujaat’ to the martyred policeman as well as Rs 30,00,000 in cash to his family under the Prime Minister Package for martyred personnel.
The minister also announced to give a plot to the family members of the deceased, as well as giving jobs to his son and nephew at the rank of ASI in the police department.
For Constable Rizwan who received critical bullet injuries, the minister announced to confer on him a `Pakistan Police Medal’ and to promote him to the rank of ASI. He promised to bear all medical expenses to be incurred on his medical treatment
The body of the martyred ASI was shifted to his native city Chiniot for burial.
