SC issues notices to relevant parties in PIA corruption case

The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday issued notices to all the relevant parties during the hearing of a suo motu case pertaining to corruption in Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).
The apex court sought a comprehensive report regarding the PIA, asking whether there were chances of national airliner standing back on its feet.
A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was hearing the case.
The chief justice said the nation be informed whether there were any chances of PIA’s restoration. He said the national institutions were being destroyed and there was nobody to inquire about the rampant corruption.
PIA’s lawyer Raja Bashir told the court that the affairs in the national airliners were not smooth and the flights were being delayed.
The chief justice said the PIA was also facing allegations over the purchase of new aircraft.
He said that the PIA chairman be summoned to inform the court as to what measures were being taken,
The judge also referred to former defence minister Ahmad Mukhtar’s interview to a private Tv channel in which he conceded that deficit was Rs 42.2 billion when he took charge which later rose to Rs 111.5 billion.
