The Punjab government has delayed the establishment of education authorities on district level throughout the province till the next financial year starting from July 2013. District education authorities were required to give complete control of primary, middle, high and higher secondary schools to the district government besides recruiting teachers on local domiciles and to ensure the enrolment of maximum children in schools on reaching five years of age. Moreover, it would increase the literacy rate manifolds and would help in resolving other problems of government schools at the district level. Sources said that all arrangements were completed for the establishment of district education authorities but due to a shortage of funds and the fast approaching general elections, implementation in this connection was withheld till the next financial year.
