495 cases of murder reported in first eight months: HRCP

Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) said on Sunday that 495 cases of murder had been reported from different parts of the country during the first eight months of 2012 (January to August) including 573 women and 88 children.
An official of HRCP said according to data compiled from newspaper clippings, 210 cases of karo-kari and 367 cases of honour killing were reported during this time period.
He further revealed that police had registered 196 cases of murder during the time span and registered First Information Reports (FIRs) of 146 honour killing cases while 133 cases of karo-kari were also filed in respective police stations.
Among honour killing accused, the HRCP official said, police had arrested 74 culprits while 17 surrendered before police.
Likewise, he said 40 karo-kari accused were also arrested and 9 surrendered after committing the crime.
He further said the reason behind 223 honour killing cases was reported to be illicit relations while 110 cases were reported on the charges of marriage of choice. While 203 cases of karo-kari were also reported due to illicit relations.
