District Consumer Protection Council (DCPC) on Wednesday served a notice to the Rawalpindi Transport Authority (RTA) Secretary to ensure the implementation of taxi fare meters to facilitate the commuters.
The Consumer Protection Council member, Syed Atif Abbas issued a legal notice under the Punjab Consumer Protection Act to RTA secretary for non installation of taxi meters.
In the notice, he said that the non implementation of the taxi fare meters was a clear violation of the Punjab Consumer Act and was against the best interest of citizens.
Meanwhile, the commuters in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi had been complaining about overcharging by taxi drivers, and demanded the installation of fare meters in all cabs.
Currently the taxi users had been at the mercy of the operators who used their own writ while fixing the fares for certain distances.
Complaining about the high-handedness of taxi drivers, a commuter, Saeed Ahmed, said that there was no check on the taxi cabs and they were busy in minting money.
He said after the installation of meters it would not be possible for the taxi drivers to overcharge the passengers.
