Russia does not support those calling for overthrowing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and believes dialogue is the way to end the Syrian crisis between the government and the opposition, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.
“Russia does not want to change its stance towards the Syrian crisis,” Lavrov said in a press conference in Amman along with his Jordanian counterpart Nasser Judeh.
He said Russia is convinced that the Syrian opposition cannot do anything but finding a way to solve the Syrian crisis, stressing the need for immediate halt of bloodshed in Syria.
“We do not support those calling for the overthrow of Bashar al- Assad to stop the crisis since the terrorist acts will continue,” Lavrov said, adding that if the Syrian opposition does not want to engage in talks and only expects to topple the administration, it will lead to more killings among the Syrians.
For his part, Judeh stressed Jordan’s support for a political solution to the Syrian crisis, saying Russia and Jordan see eye to eye on this issue. He also urged dialogue between the involved parties in Syria.
