Additional Secretary Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Afzal Khan Monday said the upcoming general elections will be held under the supervision of Supreme Court (SC); but army may also be called on sensitive polling stations.
Addressing a news conference here, he said it is the topmost ECP priority to hold free and fair elections in the country and the apex court is raring to help the commission out in this regard, adding the elections will take place under the aegis of the ECP alone; however, any institution could be approached for help for the purpose.
Army may be called in on sensitive polling stations; but, this should not mean that elections will take place in its supervision, Afzal Khan clarified.
The Election Commission led by Justice (Retd) Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim, enjoys complete support from the higher judiciary, the EC official asserted adding the apex court is the source of power.
“We will definitely give explanations solicited by the higher judiciary,” he added.
