Egg prices have been soaring due to the drop in temperature, as traders wanted to earn more money. The present retail price for a dozen eggs is Rs 108 while they were being sold at Rs 60 to 65 previously in summers.
Customers asked the authorities why stern action had not been taken against those who sold items of daily use, especially edibles, at sky-rocketing prices.
Like several other items, eggs would now be out of the general publics’ reach as well.
“Stern action must be taken against profiteers and they should be sent behind bars and punished for charging extra over fixed rates of edibles. Negligence on the part of authorities encourages traders and retailers to charge their desired amount from customers”, said Mumtaz. “The recent increase in prices of eggs is attributed to the drop in temperature and prices would further sky rocket, with an increase in demand,” said Fahad a shopkeeper. “Prices of everything are rising. Tomatoes, onions, fruits and even milk and eggs had become more expensive within the last few weeks, and shopkeepers have been fleecing the public, but the authorities have failed to take any action to bring down these prices,” said Shamila, a housewife.
Meanwhile citizens urged authorities to take action against those who tried to make extra profit and demanded the fixation and monitoring of prices.
