Lahore High Court Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial on Monday sought a report from the Election Commission by December 6, on a petition regarding the local government elections in Punjab.
The chief justice directed the Election Commission to inform the court, through its report, whether electoral lists were ready or not. The single bench passed the order on a petition filed by Ahsan Javed Chohan.
Earlier, the petitioner’s lawyer argued that the provincial government was legally bound to hold local government elections but was delaying it in clear violation of the Constitution.
However, a provincial law officer requested the court to adjourn the matter as it was pending before the apex court.
The court observed that the Supreme Court was hearing the case of local government elections in
Balochistan and that had nothing to do with Punjab.
The counsel further said that the Election Commission had not completed electoral lists yet.
The court adjourned the hearing till December 6 and sought a report from the Election Commission.
