Pakistan with an estimated stroke incidence of 200 per 100,000 population is in urgent need to sensitize masses about its prevention, said neurologists in a joint statement on Tuesday.
This is extremely crucial as 40-60% reduction in stroke incidence, locally known as “Faalij” had been reported through control of stroke related risk factors, according to the neurologists.
“Mass awareness is the single most important factor in reducing stroke related disability and death,” said Pakistan Stroke Society (PSS) President, Dr. Mohammad Wasay and General Secretary, Dr.Abdul Malik.
Referring to World Health Organization (WHO), they said that stroke was the second leading cause of death for people above the age of 60 and the fifth leading cause in people aged between 15-59 years. Stroke had been the leading cause of mortality and leading cause of disability around the world.
PSS in collaboration with Pakistan Society of Neurology (PSN) and Neurology Awareness and Research Foundation (NARF) had chalked out an elaborate program to raise public awareness about the neurological disorder that was a major health related threat for many Pakistanis.
