Hearing a case pertaining to voters’ lists, Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Tuesday remarked that non-resident Pakistanis should be given the right to vote, adding that they sent significant remittances to the country.
The chief justice remarked that the court had been told that the procedure to enable non-resident Pakistanis to vote in the election was facing difficulties.
During the proceedings, senior lawyer Rashid A Rizvi said a significant portion of Karachi’s population had been denied the right to vote. He further alleged that the affected voters had been drawn out of the city’s limits. To this, the chief justice said Rizvi should approach the Election Commission regarding the issue as the election was approaching.
He remarked that if anyone had any complaint(s) pertaining to the electoral rolls, they should approach the authorities concerned for correction(s).
Subsequently, the case’s hearing was adjourned due to the absence of the counsels for the Jamaat-e-Islami and Imran Khan. The hearing was adjourned to November 7.
Yes! for the reason that overseas Pakistanis can think freely, have seen what fair society is and would not be influenced by money, biraderi, religious marketing etc and therefore they would vote for the most appropriate party/candidate.
NO! absolutely NO! – It negates the idea of Citizenship and Residency completely and opens the doors for plutocrates to manipulate elections. By the CJ logic – How about considering all descendents of the British who ruled india as potential voters as well??
Only few days the courts were whipping the dual nationality members and asking them to deposit the pay and allowances they had drawn, give affidavits and today its a U Turn.

Overseas Pakistanis have more political awareness of national & international issues affecting Pakistan and are undoubtedly madly in love with this country dare I say. The only way Pakistan can progress is when Overseas Pakistanis return(reverse brain drain) to their homeland and invest just like India & China.
