Afghan authorities alleged on Tuesday that over 100 missiles had been fired from Pakistan during the latest wave of shelling into the eastern Kunar province. They claimed that the missiles fired by the Pakistani military forces had landed in Dangam district. Kunar Governor Wasifullah Wasifi said the shelling had caused no casualties to the local population, adding that there were some reports of property damage. Wasifi said he was expecting an immediate halt in cross-border shelling after reporting the issue to UN Security Council, however added that the diplomatic efforts to prevent such attacks seemed to have failed. The Kunar governor’s statement comes a day after the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) officials announced that the protection of borders in Afghanistan was not part of the ISAF’s mission in Afghanistan. Speaking at a press conference in Kabul on Monday, ISAF spokesman Brigadier General Günter Katz said the protection of Afghanistan borders was not ISAF’s responsibility under the final statement of the Bonn Conference in 2001.
