Spokesman to the President Senator Farhatullah Bahar on Thursday denied that any mercy petition was pending in the President’s Secretariat.
Reacting to reports carried by a section of the media about the pending mercy petitions of condemned prisoners in the Presidency, the spokesman said that these reports were not based on facts.
He said that postponement of execution of death penalty had been ordered from time to time in view of statement made by the prime minister on the floor of the House that Federal government was considering commuting death sentence into life imprisonment and to take appropriate legislative measures in this regard. For this purpose the PM had also constituted a committee comprising minister for Interior, minister for Law, attorney general and representatives of provincial governments to make recommendations, he said.
He said that the executions had therefore been postponed.
