Former prime minister of the United Kingdom and UN Special Envoy for Global Education Gordon Brown has called for observing November 10 as Global Day of Action for Malala Yousafzai. In an article, he said the objective was to achieve Malala’s aim according to which every girl had the opportunity to go to school. He said the words “I am Malala” are not only a defiant challenge to the Taliban but a bold assertion that every single girl and boy should have the chance of an education. The UN special envoy pointed out that the most recent figures published by UNESCO in their Global Monitoring Report show that 61 million children did not receive an education.
A further 200 million remained illiterate despite attending school. “Equality of opportunity remains a hollow dream,” he said. Brown said Pakistan was a case study of the challenge ahead, showing how much there was still to be done “if we are to meet the Millennium Development Goal target. Some five million don’t receive an education‚ three million of whom are girls”.
