Most of the CCTV (Close Circuit Television) cameras installed at important places of Rawalpindi city and the Cantonment area to enhance security have gone out of order, but the authorities concerned are not paying any heed to repair them.
According to sources, 60 percent of the cameras were out of order, thus creating a big lapse in the security arrangements for the residents of the city. The sources revealed that Rawalpindi city had no CCTV cameras, while there were 37 cameras installed at different intersections and important places in the Cantonment and Chaklala areas.
A total of 10 cameras were installed in the district courts, out of which seven were not working properly, the sources said, adding that most of the CCTV cameras installed at Mareer Chowk, Ammar Chowk, Scheme Three, GPO (General Post Office) Chowk and many other places were without cables and could not record any footage.
The district government did not install any cameras in Rawalpindi city and the cameras put in by the traders and business community on their own were in a state of disrepair as there was no control room in the area. The business community and residents of Rawalpindi had demanded of the authorities concerned to repair the CCTV cameras to ensure that the law and order situation was not disturbed.
