Nation still suffering due to Musharraf’s coup: Nawaz

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif on Friday said the nation was still suffering due to the steps taken on October 12, 1999 when former dictator Pervez Musharraf toppled his democratically elected government.
In a statement issued on Friday on the occasion of Black Day being observed by PML-N against the 1999 coup, Nawaz said the situation changed after Musharraf took over the administrative charge of the country and more unconstitutional steps during his eight years rule weakened Pakistan’s economy and stability.
He said the world kept imposing its will on the enervated Pakistan, adding that the path of unconstitutional adventures could have been stanched.
The PML-N chief questioned whether the violators of the constitution had been tried. “Actual change will come through vote,” he added.
Protest rallies and demonstrations were held across the country under the banner of PML-N against the October 12, 1999 coup.
Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Pervez Musharraf overthrew Nawaz’s government in 1999 after then prime minister Nawaz Sharif tried removing the sitting army chief.
Nawaz had replaced Musharraf with then Inter-Services Intelligence Director General Lieutenant General Ziauddin Butt as chief of army staff when Musharraf was en-route to Karachi from Sri Lanka.

    • Yes Sharif is full of hatred and non sense…still have not learnt his own nonsense actions which provided (good or bad) reasons to Mush to coup….he did not think deep and acted foolishly to weed out military establishment from political control.

  5. Nawaz Sharif, the nation is suffering because you shelved all energy projects when you came to power after toppling second BB government. If you had not shelved those projects, there would have been no loadshedding today. The little we have is because BB was able to implement part of her policy during her two & a half years tenure.

Incidently this wealth was aid given to Pakistan but instead is being aided for a luxury life style for this family. Zardari & his cronies are the same, Pakistan's debt will go down cosiderably if a handful of these corrupt politicians do the right thing & return the stolen money to Pakistan. I hate cowards like Imran and Nawaz who have let Taliban openly target 14 year girls like Malala Yousefzai and getaway with it. Its about time muslims and Pakistani's dealt with extremism with an iron fist and zero tolerance.

Its ‘legitimate’ face was the Muttahida Majilis-e-Amal (MMA), brought to power through the manipulated 2002 election in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Arguably, the MMA spawned the expansion and strengthening of jihadi groups. The episode of Laal Masjid added another burden to an already fragile state crumbling under religious bigotry and sealed our fate by midwifing the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan. The military operation in Balochistan and the killing of Nawab Akbar Bugti under his command, a venture that continues unabated till date, has driven that province to the verge of seeking separation. The wrong-headedness of his governance is reflected in the energy crisis. Not a single megawatt of electricity was added in his long tenure. These are just a few glimpses of Musharraf’s rule. The coup of 1999 that ousted a democratically elected government stalled political development and the democratic process. It threw the country into a downward spiral of events that we are still struggling with, even after he is gone, in all probability for good.

    • Look at those numbers during Gen M period…did we have so much problems like it is today ? What democracy and politicians gave us for the past 4.5 years because of present politicians corruptions and governance…..mr Sadaf go and ask any person in the street and you will get your answer….are they happy today or 4.5 years back…..

You betrayed nation when right in the middle of Karkil war you fled like a coward to US to plead to your masters to secure Kashmir from becoming part of Pakistan. It was matter of days only when Pakistan was about to declare a victory over Kashmir. You did not let that happen. India, after that, not only have secured Kashmir by further gripping its possession but has also stopped water coming into Pakistan through rivers. Nawaz Sharif is a traitor. He has no right to be in power.

  20. The proclamation of 3rd November 2007 arresting the supreme court judges was promulgated by the law minister Zahid Hamid. However once the care taker government was installed, the same Zahid Hamid was welcome to join PML(N) by N.S. Could Mian Sahib justify his action?
