Blast targets police in Quetta, kills teenager, injures 15

A bomb blast on Double Road killed a teenage vendor, while injuring 15 others, including four policemen, on Monday. Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Mir Zubair Mahmood said that the bomb was attached with a bicycle parked near a police check post on Double road, outside the office of Urban Planning and Development department. The police chief said that the blast injured 16 people, including 4 policemen. He said a 15-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries later in the hospital. The CCPO said that teams of police and Frontier Corps (FC), including one headed by him, rushed to the site after hearing the blast, and cordoned off the area, and shifted the injured to Quetta Civil Hospital. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Asif Ghafoor said the killed teenager was identified as Jalaluddin.
Police officials investigating the blast said the bomb was detonated through a remote controlled device and targeted the nearby police checkpost. The policemen injured in the blast were identified as ASI Fetah Sher, Head Constable Karim Khan, Constable Abdul Ghani, and Constable Bashir Ahmed.
According to bomb disposal squad, the bomb weighed five kilogrammes, and the powerful blast damaged the surrounding buildings. The responsibility of the blast was claimed by a lesser known group, United Baloch Army. Its spokesman Mazar Baloch called a news agency from an undisclosed location, and claimed responsibility. Police have registered a case against unidentified men and is investigating the case.
KHUZDAR KILLING: Elsewhere in Khuzdar, unidentified attackers gunned down a senior medical officer of Khuzdar Civil Hospital near the Civil Colony area. According to police, Dr Dawood Aziz Jan was going to hospital for work when armed assailants riding a motorbike shot at him and fled from the scene. Dr Jan died on the spot.
After getting news of the incident, police reached the site and shifted the body to Khuzdar Civil Hospital for autopsy. The dead body was handed over to the heirs after completing legal formalities, police said.
The reason behind the killing could not be ascertained so far. Police are probing into the matter.
