Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice (r) Fakhruddin G Ebrahim said that the parliament had the power to extend the tenure of the government in emergency by one year, and that the commission cannot interfere in the legislature’s powers.
In an interview on Sunday, the CEC said the commission could seek help from the army and judiciary for fair, free and transparent elections. He said that the main concern during elections would be to maintain law and order and the commission would do its best in this regard.
About taking fresh oath from lawmakers on the dual nationality issue, he warned that the commission would take the next step if the parliament did not administer new oaths to its members. He explained that any decision taken would be in line with the constitution and the Supreme Court’s instructions. Ibrahim said that a meeting of the commission would be held on Tuesday to devise a strategy against dual nationality holders.
He said he had not been offered the post of care taker prime minister. He also said that the ECP had no role in forming a caretaker government, and this task would be accomplished by the government and the opposition jointly. He hoped that the government and the opposition would together find a suitable person for the office of caretaker prime minister.
Ebrahim said that the ECP was ready to hold elections any time but did not have the power to decide when they would be held.

  2. Another joke by the CEC for extension of government by the parliament.CEC is advised to suggest 10 years for extension of this government and the head of the CEC will be awarded more than his expectations as Aitzaz has got, follow up the path of oppotunists as the State of emergency will never be expected to be lifted in Pakistan.By stating this world,PPP government will be relaxed.Keep this policy up,up above the Supreme court no body will try to challenge it far as this co-alliance government is in power.Whst sre the views and veiws points of Tiger-labelled PML N .Perhaps they are sleeping deeply.

  3. janab cec sb, just plz finish ur work and go home stop telling new channel for killing pakistanis, enough we have suffered this government bcoz of pmln and army. and plz just finish ur home work and leave the office, try to bring new elections after eid,so we could get rid of this dajal government

  4. CEC is only saying what constitution says. He is not Chief Justice who pokes his nose in the functioning of the parliament and its powers. I am not a member of any political party but believe me PPP and its allies will again come to power provided elections are ever held. Establishment will create such a chaos and anarchy that elections will be postponed. Take my word seriously.
