Awami National Party (ANP) has refused the government’s demand of cooperation in connection with the dual nationality issue.
While talking to the media, ANP Acting President Haji Adeel said his party’s stance on the dual nationality issue was quite clear and no change had been introduced in it.
He said that a few days back, Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf hosted a breakfast for the ANP leadership during which he requested the party’s support in introducing an amendment pertaining to the dual nationality issue inside the parliament. Adeel said he clearly informed the PM that his party would never tolerate dual nationality holders within the parliament, adding that this was also conveyed to President Asif Ali Zardari.
While elaborating upon the party’s stance, Adeel questioned as to how could a person who takes oath to protect another country also protect Pakistan. He also mentioned that in many other countries, including India and Afghanistan, dual nationality holders were not eligible for becoming members of the parliament.
To a question, the ANP leader clarified that he and his party were not against the right to vote for overseas Pakistanis, as it was their birth right and should be given to them.
