Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Saturday said that the people considered the judiciary as their saviour and the judicial policy’s advantages had started reaching out to the citizens.
Speaking to a meeting of the National Judicial Policy Making Committee (NJPMC) in Quetta, Chief Justice Iftikhar said after implementation of National Judicial Policy, the
disposal rate as well as performance of the justice sector institution has improved considerably. The Judges are making extra efforts to meet the targets of Policy.
Chief justices of the high courts of the four provinces, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) and the Federal Shariat Court were also present during the meeting.
He said that the judges are always mindful of the fact that ‘Not only Justice be done but it must also be seen to have been done’; for this reason High Courts were asked to direct District and Sessions Judges to physically verify each and every pending old case (i.e. cases instituted upto 31st December 2008) in district for situation analysis.
He said that decisions in the country should be made on the basis of merit, adding that, it was everyone’s responsibility to ensure the dispensation of justice.
Moreover, the chief justice said that the solution to the people’s problems lay in rule of law, adding that, a just society was vital to the development of a strong economy.
“We are trying to deliver justice to the people at their door steps,” Chief Justice Iftikhar said.
He further said that the number of pending cases had also declined in the subordinate courts.
Talking about the jail conditions, he added that, the strong exception to the deteriorating conditions of jails has been taken and it is realized that there is a dire need for reform in jails to provide and environment to the convicts that after serving their term they should be reintegrated into society as responsible and law abiding citizens. In order to alleviate the sufferings of prison inmates and improve the living conditions in jails, directions are being issued to the concerned authorities.
