Punjab Youth Festival 2012: District Level nears completion

Several of the sporting events of the District Level of the Punjab Youth Festival 2012 are near completion while events like badminton, karate, arm wrestling, tug of war volleyball and bodybuilding concluded on Thursday.
The Sports Board Punjab is directly conducting the sports events of the festival while in collaboration with Higher Education Commission, Livestock and Dairy Development, Social Welfare, Population Welfare and School departments. A total of 10,512 players, who were the top performers of the previous levels, showed their skills in this fourth level of the festival and 2586 won their respective matches to stake their claim for selection for the teams that will figure in the fifth level that is the Divisional Phase of the festival. In Lahore competitions of badminton, arm wrestling, cricket, volleyball, tug of war, billiard, table tennis, hockey, athletics karate, chess and basketball were held and around 608 were involved in these events and 228 won their encounters. Similarly in other areas of the Lahore division like Sheikhupura 440 were the participants and 154 winners, at Kasur hockey and football matches were played by 96 players and 32 won their games and at Nankana Sahib 166 took part in five sport and 83 were the lucky persons.
The Inter-collegiate Weightlifting competitions were organized by Islamia College Railway Road Lahore and on the one-day event that concluded at the Punjab University Ground near Chaburji Lahore more than 30 weightlifters from five colleges took part. Punjab College of Commerce Muslim Town Lahore team won by securing 45 points whereas Punjab College of Commerce City Campus Lahore were runners up by managing 20 points followed by Govt. Islamia College Railway Road Lahore with 12 points. Islamia College Railway Road Lahore, Principal, Professor Amjad Ali Shakir was the honorable Guest of the occasion and distributed the prizes to the winners. In Taekwondo 55 kgs, Adil Mushtaq of Iqbal Town was declared winner, in 65 kgs, Asif Ali of Iqbal Town was the winner while in 75 kgs, Shahan Ali of Iqbal Town bagged first position to win the title. In Volleyball, Data Ganj Bux beat Nishtar Town 2-0. The score was 25-8, 25-7. Wahga Town defeated Shalimar Town 2-1. The score was 25-13, 25-14, 25-15. In the final, Wahga Town hit Data Ganj Bax 2-1 with the score 25-23, 25-21 and 25-20. In the cricket Hardball, Samanabad defeated Gulberg by six wickets. Aziz Bhatti Town moved past Shalimar Town by 27 runs, Ravi Town banged Iqbal Town by 19 runs and Data Ganj Bax Town defeated Nishtar Town by 51 runs. In gymnastic, Punjab College won the title while Govt College for Women was placed second and Govt Islamia College Railway Road was third from among 10 colleges. In the healthy baby competitions which was held between Mohammad Ali Safdar of Cantt and Fatima Khan also of Cantt and Safdar was declared the winner. Advisor to CM Naseem Banu was the chief guest and gave the prizes to the winners. The Handicrafts competitions were held at Government Home Economics College for Women Lahore. A number of participants showed their expertise in Handicrafts. The activity of the festival continued in other parts of Punjab too with Rawalpindi getting 889 involved in 26 sports and non-sport events and 273 registered victories. At Sargodha 127 got to the top from 330 participants and at Gujranwala from among 380, 132 were the triumphant.
Likewise, Faisalabad had 773 competitors and 146 winners, in Sahiwal six events were contested by 55 players and 21 were stars of the day. Multan saw 367 taking part in 12 events and win came 92 people’s way. At Bahawalpur and Dera Ghazi Khan 520 and 866 participated in different events and 107 and 69 were the respective winners. In the non-sporting events 18 districts arranged competitions of naat khani, milli naghme, qirat, painting etc in which around 4118 students of colleges took part and 1151 were honored. Rawalpindi had 150 participants and 57 winners, Sargodha 116 participants and 49 winners, Gujranwala had 471 participants and 177 winners, Lahore got 551 participants and 36 winners, Sahiwal had 115 participants and 39 winners and Bahawalpur had 85 participants and 39 winners. The department of Livestock and Dairy Development organized events like horse racing, horse dance, pet competitions in which 77 got registered and 21 won their events. Under Social Welfare department competitions of cooking, dress making, dress designing and handicraft were held and 121 ladies displayed their talent in these events and seven were the winners.

  1. in lodhran the prizes for winner bodybuilding and weightlifting have not delieverd and no track suites awarded at tehsil and district level.
