United States of America (USA), through the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) would install 75 water pumps in the metropolis. USAID under Power Distribution Program (PDP) is funding an up gradation and expansion of Karachi Water and Sewage Board’s (KWSB) infrastructure.
USA Consul General Michael Dodman and Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat-Ul-Abad Khan participated in the ground breaking ceremony of KWSB’s Clifton pumping station. In the first phase of the KWSB overhaul, PDP would install 75 water pumps in the city. The new pumps would use 40 percent less energy than the ones they would replace, conserving up to 1.73 megawatts of electricity daily. With all the 75 new pumps operating, KWSB would save $1.15 million annually in energy costs. The programme aims to facilitate 25,000 households in the first phase. Dodman talking to sources said that: “the U.S government has a proud history of supporting both the water and power sectors in Pakistan. The most important sector for civilian assistance is the energy sector and the project will, increase overall water security.”
KW&SB supplies water to 20 million residents of the city from Dhabeji and Hub filtration plants using 400 water umps throughout the city.
