South Africa has lost its number-one position in the ICC T20 Championship table after failing to qualify for the semi-finals of the ICC World Twenty20 Sri Lanka 2012. Defeats against Pakistan, Australia and India in the Super Eight stage meant it has slipped four positions to fifth spot.
The number-one position has now been taken over by Sri Lanka, which has only lost one of its five matches in the tournament so far. Mahela Jayawardena’s team won all three matches in the Super Eight stage. This successful run has provided it a jump of three places. This means Thursday’s semi-final between Sri Lanka and Pakistan will be a match between the number-one ranked and number-three ranked sides in the world after Mohammad Hafeez’s team moved up two places as a result of its two wins in the Super Eight stage. Pakistan trails second-ranked India by two ratings points. India missed out on a semi-final spot in the ICC World Twenty20 Sri Lanka 2012 on a Net Run-Rate.
